The Media According to Sally

By Sally Stewart, author of Media Training 101

Teresa Heinz Kerry

Did Teresa Heinz Kerry have a major fight with her husband before they went on the Today Show this morning?  Boy, she looked p.o.’d.  She was looking everywhere BUT at her husband when he was talking to Meredith and she seemed reluctant to participate in the interview, even when Meredith questioned her directly and her husband encouraged her to talk about the book they co-wrote that is newly published.

In the MT 101 playbook, Teresa blew it.  She had a chance to show the TV audience a good side of herself and instead, came off haughty and oddly disinterested.

Hanging out with Ingrid, Jack and Lisa

Over at best dog-friend Lisa’s to have dinner with her folks, Jack and Ingrid, who are visting from London. They say I have to start watching “Dancing With the Stars” more seriously because it communicates something pretty interesting about America.

I said, it just seems so hokey, all these women wearing bouffant hairdos and long dresses when nobody dresses that way anymore.

And Ingrid replied that was precisely what made it such a must-watch. It demonstrates something about our collective longing for the 1950s, when glamour and romance and slow dancing was the thing.

My view of The View

I never was a huge fan of Rosie O’Donnell — I never really bought her as “the Queen of Nice”.  That persona just never rang true to me and now, after Rosie’s court battle over her defunct magazine and her fueds with a certain comb-over afficionado, I think the Queen of Nice tag has been retired.

But I have to say that The View is a more interesting show with Rosie at the helm.  Thanks to her, The View isn’t just recycling the same old guests pumping their latest movies or TV shows.  Now, you might tune in and find an unexpected guest host or a segment on a real issue (not just how some poor actress has to juggle family and work) that never would have found a place on the old The View.

Good for Rosie.  And good for the rest of us.
